Joey’s joy
Pat Mastroianni
Actor Pat Mastroianni plays Joey Jeremiah in Degrassi: The Next Generation and just landed a recurring role as Greg, a coffee house owner in the upcoming ABC series Beautiful People filmed in Canada. We caught up with Mastroianni at the Markham residence he and wife Carmela have called home for almost four years.
NAME: Pat Mastroianni
OCCUPATION: Actor
RESIDENCE: Tudor-style bungalow in Markham
IN RESIDENCE: Four years
Q: Describe your home?
A: Our home is 37 years old. It is a dark brown aluminum siding Tudor-style bungalow with dark brown wood trim. On the main floor, we have three bedrooms including a large green master bedroom with carpet that matches my golden retriever Bosco. Our living room and dining room is spacious with golden walls and dark stained oak hardwood floors. The kitchen is yellow and has light wood doors with stainless steel appliances. Our family room is in the finished basement; it has deep red walls which complement our Santa Fe style couch. We just renovated the downstairs bathroom with Italian sandstone coloured ceramic flooring, light blue walls, a stainless steel toilet lid and a cream tiled shower stall.
Q: What attracted you to this residence?
A: We loved the style of the home, both the interior and exterior, and especially that the house has wainscoting, crown and floor mouldings and French doors throughout, which made the space look very classy.
Q: How would you describe the decor?
A: We furnished the house with lots of Santa Fe style teak pieces in light and medium stains including an armoire in the family room, a dining room set and hutch and our entire bedroom set. We really had a look of our own we were trying to achieve, especially when it came to the paint colours. We have used lots of colour all through the house including our blue guest room and our third bedroom in cappuccino. All the colours are from the Group of Seven Para Paints collection.
Q: Did you renovate yourself or use a professional?
A: Most of our family has one skill or another to help us restore and renovate. My father did the driveway and the retaining walls. My uncle did the tiles in our basement. My father-in-law helped me with stucco and drywall repair. My brother-in-law did all the electrical. They and more friends and family poured so much sweat and tears into our home and that’s what makes it feel so special.
Q: How has your home changed ?
A: We changed everything from the front of the house to interior walls and flooring. Everyone at my local Home Depot knows my credit card number by heart.
Q: What about your house reflecting your personality?
A: The house is colourful, friendly, welcoming, yet quirky.
Q: What’s your favourite room?
A: The room that I am most proud of is our family room downstairs. It has a home theatre with a 51-inch big screen TV with a nine-speaker surround sound system.
Q: What piece of furniture will you never part with?
A: I will never part with our Santa Fe couch because it was the first item my wife and I bought, so I have sentimental attachment to it. Besides it is so great to snuggle in with my wife or dog, whoever is closest!
Q: What do you feel most comfortable fixing yourself?
A: My wife and I have been experimenting with gardening. We both like to get our hands dirty planting and weeding, although I hate mowing the lawn.
Q: If money is no object, what is your fantasy home renovation project?
A: I would love to turn our attic into a secret playroom with a skylight, where I would store my video games and put all my own photos and artwork on the walls. Lastly, I would install a firefighter’s pole to slide into the kitchen for dinner when the wife calls.
Q: Do you have advice for other homeowners?
A: Never be afraid to make a mistake when renovating. Try and do things on your own. You will never learn unless you do and you will feel a great sense of accomplishment.
