Salisbury Steak
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp (45 mL) vegetable oil, divided
-
1 small onion, finely minced
-
1 1/2 lb (675 g) lean ground sirloin
-
1 egg
-
1 tbsp (15 mL) Worcestershire sauce
-
1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt
-
1/2 tsp (2 mL) garlic powder
-
1/4 tsp (1 mL) dry mustard
-
1/4 tsp (1 mL) freshly ground black pepper
-
1 onion, sliced
-
1 cup (250 mL) sliced mushrooms
-
2 cups (500 mL) prepared brown gravy (package or
can)
Directions
-
In a skillet, heat 1 tbsp (15 mL) of
the oil over medium-low heat. Saute minced onion for 3
minutes or until browned.
-
Place ground sirloin in a large bowl. Add cooked onions,
egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, garlic powder, mustard and pepper. Shape
into 6 small patties, about 3/4 inch (2 cm) thick.
Score with a knife.
-
In a skillet, heat remaining oil over medium heat.
Cook Salisbury steaks for 10 to 12 minutes, turning every
2 to 3 minutes, or until cooked through. Transfer to
a plate and keep warm.
-
Drain excess fat from skillet and wipe it out with
a paper towel. Add sliced onion and mushrooms to skillet
and saute for 6 minutes or until browned.
-
Meanwhile, prepare gravy according to package instructions (if using powdered
gravy). Stir into mushroom mixture. Serve Salisbury steaks topped with
mushroom and onion gravy.

A reader wants to know how to make her own
self-rising flour.
Self-rising flour contains baking powder, which is why it rises
in a recipe without any other leavening agent.
To make your own, add 1 1/2 tsp (7 mL)
baking powder and 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) salt to each
cup (250 mL) of all-purpose flour.
